Nielsen: Helios Overture
Dohnányi: Variations on a Nursery Song (Soloist: Zoë Mather)
Sibelius: Symphony No 1
"The Bristol Concert Orchestra presented an imaginative programme of two rarely heard works and a popular symphony.
The Helios Overture by Nielsen is a descriptive piece written by the composer whilst on holiday in Athens. The shimmering strings conveyed the Athenian atmosphere.
Dohnányi's Variations on a Nursery Song is a parody of various composers of his time. The romantic mood was shown by pianist Zoë Mather's skilful playing and by the excellent support of the orchestra.
Sibelius' First Symphony alternates between dark and melancholy and full-blooded eloquence. Under the enthusiastic direction of conductor Stefan Hofkes the orchestra gave a performance both vibrant and tranquil. Particularly impressive throughout was the string section. The rousing finale rounded off a very enjoyable evening".
