Jacob: Trombone Concerto (Soloist: Amos Miller)
Bruckner: Symphony No 4 "Romantic"
"The programme for the first concert of their 1999/2000 season was a challenging one.
Gordon Jacob's Trombone Concerto is rarely performed but soloist Amos Miller, playing the piece for the first time, gave a performance of high quality, contrasting the lively outer movements with a beautifully tender interpretation of the Adagio.
Not many amateur orchestras would think of tackling a Bruckner symphony. However, undaunted, the BCO decided on the Fourth, known as the Romantic.
The horns play a memorable part throughout and Sue Tyley (principal) and her colleagues, after a nervous start, produced some magical moments. The brass section tackled the difficult score with great maturity.
In the ensemble work the orchestra was at its best and apart from a few minor lapses Stefan Hofkes, the excellent conductor, and the players are to be congratulated on the finished product".
