STEFAN HOFKES

Stefan was born in The Netherlands in 1972 where he studied piano and conducting at the Utrecht Conservatoire with Alan Weiss.  During that time Stefan was also conductor of the Utrecht Chamber Orchestra.

After receiving his concert-recital degree for piano in 1995 he continued his conducting studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Christopher Seaman.  He was awarded the Ricordi Conducting prize in 1996.

Stefan combines the positions of musical director of the BCO and the Reading Symphony Orchestra with professional engagements for different orchestras in Europe, including the Transylvania State Philharmonic, the Maastricht Symphony and Das Orchester des Landes Regierung Düsseldorf.  He is principal guest conductor of the Utrecht International Music Festival and was recently appointed musical director of the Beauforthuis in Holland, being artist-in-residence for their classical concert series, playing and conducting with top international soloists.  In 2000 Stefan conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a finalist in the Tanglewood Festival Fellowship conducting competition in the United States.

As a pianist Stefan has performed in the main Dutch concert halls and also gives chamber recitals in the UK, Germany, Austria and France.  In May this year he made his debut in Wigmore Hall, London’s premier chamber music venue.  He has recorded four CDs - on the Musaeus and BVD classical labels.
